Three Architecture Mandates for a Digital Consultancy

A digital consultancy needed external technical depth for three different client projects at once.

Situation

A digital consultancy in Hamburg was working on several client projects at once, each raising its own deep architecture questions: an existing e-commerce architecture, a new content management concept, and a FinTech credit platform. For all three, internal capacity for the necessary technical depth was missing.

Task

As external advisors, we were to support across the three projects: a technical due diligence of the e-commerce architecture, a greenfield concept for a headless CMS, and a target architecture for the credit platform, with the security and scaling requirements typical of a FinTech platform.

Implementation

  • Tech DD of the e-commerce architecture

Assessment of architecture and risk for this client project.

  • Greenfield headless CMS concept

Architecture concept for a new content management system.

  • Architecture for the credit platform

Target architecture for a FinTech application with the corresponding requirements.

  • Cross-cutting advisory

One technical point of contact for all three strands, instead of three separate specialists.

Approach

For each project, we adapted the approach to actual need: a compact assessment for the existing e-commerce architecture, an architecture-level concept for the new CMS, and more detailed architecture work for the credit platform, where regulatory and security requirements called for more depth.

The common thread was the same mindset as in a due diligence: first clarify the current state and requirements, then deliver a reasoned target architecture, regardless of whether it concerned e-commerce, a CMS, or a regulated FinTech application.

Result

The digital consultancy could continue all three client projects on a reviewed, documented technical foundation, instead of speculating internally on architecture questions it lacked the depth for.

Transferable lessons

  • External depth beats internal generalization

For specialist questions, a specialist is worth more than a generalist in-house.

  • DD thinking transfers to any domain

Clarify the current state, then the target architecture. That works for e-commerce as much as FinTech.

  • Regulated domains need more depth

A credit platform demands more care than a CMS concept.
